Two More 2007-2008 Verbals for the UW Women

In addition to Amalee Windmeier, a defenseman/forward from Coon Rapids High School that I reported on earlier in the week, the UW Women's Hockey Team has reportedly also gotten verbals from two Cal Selects players. The first is forward Kelly Nash who was a tied for 4th in scoring at this Summer's Select 17/18 Girls Festival. The second is defenseman Olivia Jakiel who also participated at the Select 17/18 Festival.

Nigel Williams #13 Prospect for Avs

Nigel Williams is currently listed as #13 on the Colorado Avalanche prospect list. Unfortunately for the Avs, they only have one other defenseman currently rated in front of Nigel Williams. Williams needs some time to develop, so the Avs are likely going to continue to address their defenseman needs via trades for veterans or high level prospects. Here's what Hockey's Future had to say about Nigel Williams:

13. Nigel Williams, D (18) 2nd Round, 2006 Entry Draft
Surprisingly, Williams did not go as early in the draft as some had speculated allowing Colorado to snatch him in the second round. Like many of Colorado’s top prospects, Williams comes from the US National Development Program and made a splash at the Four Nations Tournament last February scoring two goals and an assist in the three-game tournament. In 2005-06, he played in 48 games scoring six goals and 15 points. Williams will continue to develop in the NCAA system, as he has committed to playing with NCAA Champion University of Wisconsin. The Avs consider Williams to be an offensive defenseman despite the fact that his production dropped this past season. At 6’4 and 226 pounds, the Avs certainly like Williams’ size and the fact that the Illinois native is not afraid to be physical.

Amalee Windmeier to UW Women's Team

Reports are circulating that Amalee Windmeier, who plays for Coon Rapids High School and the Minnesota Ice Cats has committed to the UW Women's Hockey Team for 2007-2008. Amalee primarily plays defense, but also plays some forward.

Pat Kane Playing Major Junior

In the past month or so, Pat Kane had eliminated the possibility of playing for UW next season, leaving Michigan, Boston College or the Major Junior route as his final three options. It appears from this article that he has decided to play Major Junior.

Team Canada U-22 Women Win Series vs. US

Team Canada U-22 Women's Team won the rubber match of the three game series with the US by a score of
2-0. The Canadians outshot the Americans 33-25 in securing the game and the series.

Pavelski Ranked Thirteenth in Sharks System

Hockey's Future has former UW Center Joe Pavelski ranked thirteenth in the San Jose Sharks system. They predict he'll spend this season with the Worcester Sharks. If he is able to improve his skating, Hockey's Future believes he could be a third line center for the Sharks in the future.

Kyle Klubertanz Blurb from Hockey's Future

Hockey's Future has Kyle Klubertanz ranked as the #20 prospect for Anaheim. The most interesting part of the ranking for UW fans is likely the last sentence of the blurb: "With the number of prospects Anaheim currently has in its system, Klubertanz will probably be best served to finish his college career before turning pro". Klubertanz is behind seven other defenseman in Anaheim's system, and therefore could end up at UW for two more years even if he has a very good season in 2006-2007.

Potential Forward Recruits for UW in 2007

An article in today's Wisconsin State Journal sheds some light on potential UW forward recruits for 2007. Brent Gwidt and Brett Bruneteau are both mentioned, and have been known to be interested in UW for a while. The two new names are Jan-Mikael Juutilainen and Brad Malone.

Juutilainen played for Finland in the World Junior Championship and was impressive. He was drafted by Chicago, and from the sounds of the article might be steered to UW by the Blackhawks. He will be playing this coming season for Omaha in the USHL.

Brad Malone is from Miramachi, New Brunswick, and according to the article is considered the top available North American recruit for 2007-2008. His uncle worked with Mike Eaves while both were with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

One last thing that caught my eye from the article is that it starts out by saying UW needs at least two forwards for 2007-2008. This acknowledges the possibility that Chris Hickey and Josh Turnbull could enter school a season earlier than planned.

Canada 6-0 over US U-22 Women

Canada went off on the US U-22 Women yesterday after losing the first game 2-1 in overtime. Canada defeated the US 6-0 while outshooting the US just 31-26. Bobbi Jo Slusar from UW had an assist in the game for Canada. The good news for UW players in the game was that Jessie Vetter was NOT in the net for Team USA.

Here's the line chart for the US team vs. Canada.

US over Canada in 4 Nations Festival

The US U-22 Women's team downed Canada in the first game of the 4 Nations Festival being held in Kitchener, Canada by a score of 2-1 in overtime. Erica Lawler from UW scored the first goal for the U.S. The U.S. outshout Canada 41-21 in the game.

Josh Calleja to Stevens Point

It is rumored that Josh Calleja, the former New Richmond High School forward, will be playing for UW-Stevens Point beginning this season. Calleja lead the state in scoring his Junior year, and finished second in his senior year of high school. He has been playing in the MJHL, where he lead the league in....you guessed it, scoring.

UW Men's Hockey...Practices, Bohmbach & The White House

There was a good article today in the Capital Times on the UW Men's Hockey Team. The article covered topics from early practice sessions, to Bohmbach's admission this season, to a fund raiser for Jake Dowell's father to the Badgers potential trip to the White House as national champions.

Thanks to 60 min. for pointing it out.

UW Women at the USA Women's National Festival

Jinelle Zaugg and Erika Lawler are leading the way statistically at the USA Women's National Festival. Zaugg leads the Festival in goals (3) and points (5) with Lawler close behind with four points. Jesse Vetter has done well to raise her save percentage to .886 after being in the low .800's early on in the Festival. Angie Keseley has been held off the score sheet completely to this point.

Derrick LaPoint Blurb

Hockey's Future has Derrick LaPoint ranked 14th in the latest Florida Panthers Top 20 Prospect List. Here's a part of their blurb on LaPoint:

.....Well-known for his passing and puckhandling proficiency, LaPoint also carries a 6'3 175 lb. frame that helps him play his two-way game. He plans to spend this season with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL before playing college hockey at North Dakota in 2007. It will be interesting to see how well his high-caliber high school offense translates into the more difficult USHL and eventually NCAA games, however it appears this savvy blueliner has the needed tools to eventually do well.

2006 Junior Evaluation Camp-Jack Skille Gets Props

Jack Skille gets some love in this Hockey's Future story.

Team Canada Women's National Camp

Defenseman Bobbi Jo Slusar from UW is participating in Team Canada's Women's National Camp. Like the Americans, the Canadians divide into two teams and play games against one another, and also against a team from Finland. Through four games played, Slusar has two goals and two penalty minutes.

Team USA Women's National Camp

Two of the four Badger women at the 2006 Team USA Women's National Camp are faring pretty well statistically after the first three games. Jinelle Zaugg leads all scorers with three goals, two assists and zero penalty minutes. Erica Lawler has a goal, an assist and 2 penalty minutes.

Angie Kesely has been held scoreless through three games and Jessie Vetter has just a .828 save percentage with 24 saves and 5 goals allowed.

It should be noted that they did have penalty shots in the first game rather than power plays, so that could have scored any player's numbers considerably, especially goalies.

Bohmbach Accepted to UW-Will Join Team This Season

Andy Bohmbach has been academically accepted at UW for this season according to the Wisconsin State Journal. This is good news for the Badger program as it will bring their forward numbers to 15 for the season.

Garrett Suter Shooting for 2007 to Become a Badger

The Capital Times has a story today indicating Garrett Suter's appeals for admission to UW for 2006 have been denied, but that he is still determined to get into UW and will now shoot for next season. Two years in a row he has been unable to qualify academically. The article also mentions he does not yet have a USHL team to play for, but has been talking with Omaha and Lincoln.

Blake Geoffrion...."Mr. Publicity"

Here's yet another Blake Geoffrion article, this time from USA Hockey's website. If the Badgers hadn't won the National Championship last season, I'd probably be wondering if all the publicity around Blake was the reason for the ticket sales being up this season!

Junior Evaluation Camp Wrap Up-Skille/Geoffrion/Kessel

Hockey's Future has part 1 of their Junior Evaluation Camp Wrap Up on their site. They mention Jack Skille finished tied for second in scoring at the camp, and also that the play of Blake Geoffrion stood out. Finally, they mention that the Boston Bruins GM, Peter Chiarelli had indicated at the camp that Phil Kessel could join the Bruins any time he wanted, and that the decision was entirely up to Kessel. He also mentioned that Phil would have to make the Bruins roster, and would not be guaranteed a spot. Phil has apparently decided he feels he can earn a spot this season, as many sources are indicating he has signed with the Bruins.

Kessel a Gopher No More

Madison native Phil Kessel has reportedly turned pro and signed a contract with the Boston Bruins. The Golden Gopher Hockey Blog was the first source that I found had this information, and today ESPN is confirming it.

Ben Street Bulks Up

The Capitol Times had a nice article today on Ben Street working out hard in the offseason and adding some weight to his frame.

The article also mentions that Mike Eaves is leaning towards having Andrew Joudrey center Ross Carlson and Jack Skille on the first line to start the season.

Blake Geoffrion & Jamie McBain-Hockey's Future Report & Rank

Hockey's Future just put out their Top 20 Prospects ranking for the Nashville Predators. Included on the list is recent draft pick and incoming UW Freshman forward Blake Geoffrion ranked number eleven. Here's part of the info they provide:

...At the Preds recent conditioning camp, Geoffrion showed his speed and appeared to fit in well despite being the youngest player present. He could stand to add some weight (and probably will) to his 6’2, 195-pound frame.
Geoffrion was invited to the U20 Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, New York along with 13 other members of the U18 team. Head coach Ron Rolston hails from Ann Arbor, where Geoffrion attended high school. Prior to his experience with USA Hockey programs, Geoffrion played minor hockey in the Nashville Youth Hockey League. His grandfather, Bernie Geoffrion, and great grandfather, Howie Morenz, are both in the NHL Hall of Fame.

Hockey's Future also released their Top 20 Prospects for the Carolina Hurricanes. Incoming UW defenseman Jamie McBain is ranked number eleven. Here's part of their analysis:

....Although some scouts considered McBain’s abilities to be merely average, the ‘Canes felt the two-way defenseman would add valuable blueline depth to the system late in the second round. In 2006-07, McBain will play for the 2006 NCAA champion University of Wisconsin.

Kyle Turris Playing in BCHL This Season

The Burnaby Express have indicated that Kyle Turris will not play in the WHL this season, but will instead play for the Express once again in the BCHL. This is good news for Badger fans as playing Major Junior would make him ineligible to play for the Badgers for at least one year, and would have meant Turris was no longer planning on attending UW. After losing Sam Gagner to Major Junior, this should be a relief to Badger fans everywhere.

As a part of it's Hockey A to Z feature, Inch profiled UW's Kyle Klubertanz. Thanks to 60 min. for pointing this article out.

USA vs. Canada-U-18 Junior World Cup

Team Canada defeated Team USA 3-0 today in the Championship Game at the U-18 Junior World Cup.

CSTV 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp Info on Jack Skille

CSTV's Elliot Olshansky made it to the Junior Evaluation Camp for the final two days. In this report he talks about Jack Skille's play at the camp, and here you can find the audio of his interview with Jack Skille.

Saturday, August 12, 2006

Final 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp Report

Team White won today to finish 4-0 at the camp while Team Blue lost in a shootout vs. Sweden and finished 3-1. Jack Skille had a goal and an assist to finish out a very strong camp. Blake Geoffrion had an assist for Team Blue. Geoffrion had started the camp on Team White and I'm guessing may have changed teams to fill in for someone who was injured.

Phil Kessel and Rhett Rakhshani each finished with seven points in four games to lead all scorers. Jack Skille finished with six points, Blake Geoffrion four, and Jamie McBain one.

From Waupun to Boston

Derek Teachout and JJ McBride recently participated with Team Michigan/Great Lakes at the Hockey Night in Boston. Both played for Waupun High School last season, but according to the Caps website, McBride is playing for the Caps U-18 team this season.

More 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp

CSTV's Elliot Olshansky is blogging from the 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp. From reading his report, it sounds like Skille may have picked up an assist in today's game.

Brent Gwidt & Team Wisconsin Rosters

It's being reported that Brent Gwidt has FINALLY been contacted by the Badgers and will make a visit to campus on his way to Training Camp with the USHL's Indiana Ice. With 4 commitments tentatively for 2008 at forward for the Badgers, I guess they just needed to wait until they lost Sam Gagner to Major Junior, and missed out on Patrick Kane, Ben Winnett and Colton Grant for 2007 before beginning to pursue Brent Gwidt (unfortunately even the Badgers have a limited number of scholarships to offer). If the Badgers could still land Brett Bruneteau and Gwidt to go with Kyle Turris next season, they'd still be in great shape. I think Chris Hickey and/or Josh Turnbull could also possibly accelerate and come in for the 2007 season. Other potential targets for 2007 include Brennan Vargas and Ryan Schnell.

One more thing regarding Gwidt...judging from what I've read, and no other inside knowledge, it would seem to me he wants to be a Badger.

What is the deal with the Team Wisconsin rosters? The freakin' team has been picked for months and the rosters are still not posted on their website. Note to Team Wisconsin regarding putting rosters out: GIT R DONE.

Under 18 Junior World Cup Update

The USA Selects downed Russia yesterday at the 2006 Junior World Cup by a score of 4-2. Badger recruit Ryan McDonagh scored a goal, as did potential recruit Brett Bruneteau.

In opening game action, The US defeated Finland 3-2. Brett Bruneteau assisted on the game-winning goal.

UW recruit Kyle Turris has a goal and an assist in three games for Team Canada.

Team USA will play Team Canada on Saturday at 1 PM Eastern Time for the Championship. No info is yet available for Team USA's third game which was vs. Czech Republic.

2006 Junior Evaluation Camp

The second set of games for the USA teams at the 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp featured a lot more of the Skille-Geoffrion combo. Geoffrion assisted on a Skille goal, while Skille assisted on a Geoffrion goal when USA White defeated Finland 8-5. USA White outshot Finland 47-31.

One thing I noticed while following Geoffrion's numbers this year. He elevates his game against better competition, which makes me think he is going to be a great player for UW. His overall stats for the USNTDP U-18 team were decent as he tied for sixth in points. Geoffrion's stats vs. NCAA teams were considerably better, tying him for 3rd in points.

Team USA Blue defeated Sweden 4-2, on a shot differential of 35 to 23. Phil Kessel had a goal and an assist, while Jamie McBain had an assist and a penalty.

Wednesday, August 09, 2006

First Game Highlights from the 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp

Team USA Blue defeated Finland 4-1 while outshooting them 48-19. Phil Kessel had two goals for USA Blue. Jamie McBain, who has committed to UW for the upcoming season, was held off the score sheet except for a tripping penalty in the first period.

Team USA White defeated Sweden 3-0 and outshot them 41-28. The first (and gamewinning) goal was scored by Jack Skille assisted by Blake Geoffrion....which kind of has a nice ring to it. Maybe they'll end up on a line together at UW.

Madison Capitols Boys U-18 Roster Released

The Madison Capitols have released their U-18 Roster. As rumored, several former Capitol players have returned to play for the U-18's after spending time playing for their high school teams. UW's Classes of Forwards-Logjam in 2008

The more I think about UW's situation at forward, the more I am thinking there is a very good chance Chris Hickey and/or Josh Turnbull could be joining the Badgers next season. Here's a look at UW's scheduled graduations and the recruits that have already verballed at the forward position.

After this season UW loses these forwards:

Joudrey
Brandt
Carlson
Dowell
Skille (I think he'll go pro)

That means UW needs 4-5 forwards for next season. So far, UW has only Kyle Turris, meaning there is a need for 3-4 more forwards.

After 2007-2008 Ford is the only forward that graduates. The only potential early flight risks at forward following that season would seem to be Turris or maybe Geoffrion, though it's real early to be making those kinds of predictions.

Verballing tentatively for 2008 are Hickey & Turnbull (both of whom would be 1 year post-high school) as well as Brock Montpetit and Matt Thurber who both will be graduating from high school. By moving Hickey and Turnbull up a year, you help fill the need for next season, and release some of the logjam at forward for 2008-2009.

The other option to alleviate the logjam is to move players back a year, but think it's unlikely Hickey or Turnbull would need two years in the USHL. Thurber will have already been in the USHL for three years by 2008 so they are definitely not going to push him back. Montpetit may be able to use a year in the USHL if he hasn't already done so for his Senior year of high school.

It will be interesting to see how it unfolds, but I think the most likely scenario is to bring Hickey and/or Turnbull in early.

Two Articles on Badger Players

Hockey Thoughts dug up a couple of articles on a present Badger player, Jack Skille, as well as a future Badger, Kyle Turris. The Skille article centers on the Team USA World Junior Championship Evaluation Camp, while the Turris article focuses on Team Canada's U-18 Junior World Cup tuneup in which Turris scored a goal.

UW Recruit Brendan Smith Injury

UW recruit Brendan Smith was unable to attend Canada's U-18 National Junior Team Development Camp due to injury. No specifics are given in the report I linked, but hopefully it is nothing serious.

Badgers at the 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp

The 2006 Junior Evaluation Camp is underway with 44 of the nation's top players under the age of 20. Among them are 3 Wisconsin Badgers-Jack Skille, Blake Geoffrion and Jamie McBain. Skille and Geoffrion are on Team White for the US, while McBain will be trying to defend them as a member of Team Blue for the US. During the camp there will be both practices and games played between two teams formed from the US players, as well as a team from both Sweden and Finland. From this camp a team will be selected to represent USA at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship.

2009 Wisconsin Player Added to Heisenberg's Site

A 2009 Wisconsin player has recently been added to Heisenberg's recruiting list. He is one of five players I identified in May of this year on my other blog, Wisconsin Hockey Players Division 1 Watch as a potential Division 1 recruit for 2009. The player is Sean Little, of Fond du Lac high school who just completed participating in the USA Hockey Select 15 Festival.

Montpetit Back at Chowder Cup

UW recruit Brock Montpetit is back at the Chowder Cup. After playing with a Team Minnesota in the Junior Chowder Cup last month and not making the playoffs, Montpetit is trying his luck against older players this go-round. His team is pretty young, and will need to get past the Blue Line Blades, another team in their bracket with older players, some of which are playing Division I currently.

Many Notable Wisconsin Players on Current Waterloo Blackhawks Roster

According to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier, the following Wisconsin players are currently on the roster of the Waterloo Blackhawks:

F-Brett Olson of Superior (spent some time with Sioux City last season)
F-Keegan Meuer of Verona (1st team All-State as Junior w/Madison Memorial)
F-Craig Smith of Madison (HM All-State as Sophomore w/Madison La Follette)
D-Blake Kessel of Madison (played for Madison Capitols)
F-Josh Turnbull of Hayward (plays for Duluth East & is committed to UW)

Turnbull has been on the Blackhawks roster since the July 1st cutdown, and Olson made a USHL roster for a while last season, so they are not surprises. But Meuer, Smith and Kessel are surprises to one degree or another. Kessel was tendered by Traverse City in the NAHL and was thought to be likely playing there. Meuer was rumored to be leaving Memorial to play for the Madison Capitols. Smith played with Meuer & Kessel on the Capitols at one time. Waterloo still needs to trim their roster from 25 players to 23 players by the end of the Buc Bowl.

Brian Elliott Blurb

Hockey's Future has a new article out on the Ottawa Senators Top 20 Prospects. UW goaltender Brian Elliott is listed as prospect #11, and Hockey's Future has this to say about him:

11. (10) Brian Elliott, G, 6.5C Acquired: 9th round, 291st overall, 2003

The 2005-06 season was a pretty special year for Brian Elliott. A ninth round pick in 2003, when the NHL still had a ninth round in the draft, the Newmarket Ontario native was a finalist for the Hobey Baker after a sensational junior season at the University of Wisconsin. If not for a month-long absence due to injury, he might have won the award.
Elliott decided to play out his senior season as opposed to signing a contract this summer, and with a repeat performance, could push Glass for top goaltending prospect honors. Elliott can attribute his success to a tremendous head for the game, reading and reacting to the play very well and knowing how to play his angles. He is also committed to self-improvement, which is always a good sign in a goaltending prospect.

Why Could Be Higher: Barring injury, could have become first goalie since Ryan Miller, and third ever, to win Hobey Baker.
Why Could Be Lower: Has a lot to prove; only played 17 games his first two years of college. NHL Projection: Very good back-up or 1B goalie.
